20/03/08 Chemistry Policy
CaSE Director, Nick Dusic, attended the Parliamentary Affairs Committee meeting of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

19/03/08 M In STEM Forum Event
CaSE attended the "M in STEM Forum Event" organised by STEMNET and the London Development Agency. Speaking after the event, Hilary Leevers, CaSE Assistant Director, commented: "The presentations and discussion considered the mathematics curriculum and various enhancement programmes. It is fantastic that so much outreach is being done in this area. As more resources are being pumped into these schemes, and they are seen as a critical part of Government strategy to enhance and increase uptake of STEM education, it is vital to work out which ones work best and when and how they can most effectively be delivered."

13/03/08 Innovation Nation
CaSE was disappointed that the Innovation White Paper did not give sufficient weight to the importance of science and engineering to innovation. Commenting, Nick Dusic, said,“The Government cannot loose sight of the importance of science and engineering to the innovation agenda. Investing in cutting-edge research is the only way the UK can compete with other countries in terms of attracting the skilled individuals and companies needed for high-tech innovation.”

12/03/08 Budget 2008
CaSE welcomed the Chancellor's Budget for 2008. The new Chancellor mentioned science 7 times in his speech, beating Gordon Brown’s average of 5, although the former Chancellor’s career high was 18. Commenting on the Budget announcement Nick Dusic, CaSE’s Director, said “The Chancellor highlighted the UK’s history of scientific invention as central to the UK’s success in the global economy. It is critical that tomorrow’s innovation white paper puts investing in science and engineering at the heart of the Government’s new innovation agenda. The UK needs to redouble it efforts to produce highly skilled graduates and cutting-edge research.”

11/03/08 Women of Outstanding Achievement in SET
CaSE was delighted to attend the annual launch of the Women of Outstanding Achievement in SET photographic exhibition at the Royal Society. Hilary Leevers commented that publicly celebrating outstanding female scientists and engineers helps to provide role models for young women and girls considering a career in these areas.

11/03/08 Public Attitudes to Science
CaSE welcomed the RCUK/DIUS report on Public Attitudes to Science. The survey confirms that the majority of the public support science and engineering and see it as an important part in their lives.

CaSE was pleased to be a supporter of the Voice of the Future event held in the Houses of Parliament.


07/03/08 Science Week - The Great Funding Debate
Dr Hilary Leevers, Assistant Director of CaSE, took part in a debate hosted by the Oxford Trust to launch Oxfordshire Science Week by competing for a hypothetical £2 billion to transform British science. After the event she commented: "It was a very enjoyable evening and interesting to hear the other ideas as well as the comments from the audience. Professor Sir Chris Llewellyn Smith, member of CaSE Advisory Council, won the vote for spending on energy research, pointing out that investment in this area had halved since 1980. All the participants emphasised the importance of engaging with and properly educating the next generation of scientists, mathematicians and engineers."

05/03/08 Hilary Leevers met with Catherine Marston, of Universities UK, to discuss issues affecting international students and academics in the UK.

05/03/08 Hilary Leevers met with Dr Lloyd Anderson, Science Director at the British Council to discuss issues for international scientists and engineers working in or collaborating with the UK.
